i love you darlin, but you'll tear me apart
Identity and home, as it happens, is a sticky wicket for the expatriate. i love you darlin', but you'll tear me apart is a meditation upon said wicket for me: a simple sound experience, interlaced with spoken-word poetry, about my relationship with my home region of south-central Indiana. Distilled into a simple listening experience, i love you darlin', but you'll tear me apart splices the sonic joy of a Hoosier summer (cicada and crickets, thunderstorms, gentle rain on the lake) with the melancholia associated with the memory of a place that is no longer capable of taking its prodigal children as they are in the moment, in ceding one's hometown in lieu of roaming for another because the first one doesn't fit.
